Sandhill Cranes Jump a Ditch

Shortcut to the Corn - a flock of sandhill cranes spread their wings one by one to jump a ditch to reach an adjacent corn field from the roosting pond. This is unusual behavior since they will usually fly to the nearby corn fields. But why not walk (jump) to a nearby field, if close enough.
